Toronto qualified for the playoffs during each of Keefe's five seasons behind the bench, including when he took over midseason in 2019-20. Favorite to be the next Maple Leafs head coach
Craig Berube
Berube is the overwhelming favorite at +105, and there's a steep dropoff in the odds before Dean Evason and Gerard Gallant (+470). And then Berube is also miles ahead of both Joel Quenneville and Todd McLellan (+500).
NHL insiders speak highly of his chances too, including and most notably Darren Dreger of TSN.
Berube isn't too far removed from reaching the pinnacle of the sport while guiding the then upstart St. Louis Blues to a Stanley Cup victory in 2018-19. That came after the Blues missed the playoffs during the previous season. The championship also halted the Blues' lengthy Stanley Cup drought at 50 years, leaving the Maple Leafs with the longest such streak now after not winning since 1967.
However, Berube's St. Louis teams won only one series during the next four seasons, including missing the playoffs in 2022-23. The team then dismissed him midseason in December 2023, when the Blues held a 13-14-1 record.
